When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore. Ahhh love was in the air on Valentines day, couples strolling, flowers everywhere and the smell of Italian food encasing the restaurant of Donna Angelina in Prahran. I had booked a table for my husband and I 2 weeks earlier and even confirmed in the middle of the week just to make sure as I was very excited for our night out.
When we arrived we were greeted by a lovely Italian maitre d. We explain that we had a reservation but when they looked in the book they could not find us. My heart started to beat a little faster but all was good as they seated us any way *Phew*
The waiter handed us these amazing food and wine menus that looked more like a retro magazine and asked us what we would like to drink. I wanted room for food so I ordered still water. As we were looking over the menus the waiter came back and gave us a complimentary drink. We were both surprised and it warmed our heart at the hospitality of Donna Angelina.
The decor made us feel even more warm and fuzzy with tables lined with red roses, setting the scene for Valentines day. The open kitchen where we could see the wood oven and the amazing staff made us feel even more a part of the Donna Angelina family.
When we were ready to order we chose the Focaccia Bruschettata for entree and I chose the Fettuccine Boscaiola for mains and my husband chose a macaroni bolognaise. A thing to note when coming here is that Donna Angelina are in their early days (Only 11 weeks old) so at this stage they do not alter their menu. We asked if seafood could be mixed in with our bolognaise and they said that they couldn’t and when we asked for penne they did not have penne and could only offer macaroni as an alternative. Although a slight let down it is understandable at this stage while they grow and settle in.
Our Foccacia came out and it was like a big pizza and everything looked so fresh and tasty. Upon the first bite I knew that this was perfection. All the flavours popped and the base, oh wow the base! It was like biting into a fluffy cloud. I don’t think I have ever tasted a base so fluffy and comforting. It was truly heaven. That in itself was a 10/10!
After our entrée the waiter asked if we were ready for mains to which we gave an enthusiastic YES! Both dishes came out looking hot and delicious. The waiter when asked even came and sprinkled parmesan on my husbands pasta and it just made the dish look even more appetising!
My fettuccine was was creamy and delicious. The only let down was that the speck was quite fatty and a lot of the pieces were mostly fat with a hint of brown goodness. In saying that though it still tasted incredible and it was very very filling.
My husbands bolognaise was full of flavour and the pasta was cooked al dente, just the way pasta should be cooked! We were a little confused however as the sauce seemed to be more oil based and lacked the meatiness and the rich tomato of the bolognaise sauces that we have tried before. If we were to order this dish again we would ask for more meat as it was very sparing.
I decided not to eat all my pasta as I wanted to leave room for an affogato for dessert, as all Italian places have affogatos, right? Well in this case wrong. The waiter was very apologetic but no affogato for me *Inserts sad face*
In summary Donna Angelina was a delight. Very authentic Italian, great decor, amazing staff who were super friendly and treated us like family, delicious food that could be improved on but still amazing and wonderful prices. I would come here again in a heartbeat! They also have a Groupon deal at the moment where you can have a dinner for 2 with wine for $25!! Now that is amazing! Here is the deal- Donna Angelina Deal
All up for our wonderful romantic night I give Donna Angelina a 7.8/10
